AKA Fried Sweety Red Onions. Making an indispensable appearance in every kitchen USA as much a part of the American Southwest cuisine as Alligator Pears (Avocado). Haven't bought a counter size Deep Fryer yet that's okay I'll keep pounding on the gate. You'll get the message.
Fun with frying starts with purchasing a counter top electric fryer. Once you have your fryer learn how it operates and respect this particular piece of kitchen equipment. If you're not accustomed to frying with flour Fried Sweet Red Onions are a great starting point. Simple easy and tasty the trifecta for a first time fryer user.
1 each pint glass Gold Medal All Purpose Flour
1/2 each teaspoon McCormick Pure Ground Black Pepper
1/4 each teaspoon Morton Kosher Salt
1 each thin ring cut (1/16 inch thick) Red Onion
Wash hands with medium hot water and soap. Turn on fryer to preheat at 340 to 350 degrees. In a stainless steel mixing bowl blend by hand 1 each pint glass Gold Medal All Purpose Flour, 1/2 each teaspoon McCormick Pure Ground Black Pepper and 1/4 each teaspoon Morton Kosher Salt. Cut off each end 1/2 inch to an inch and peel the first outer layer to prep the Red Onion. With the red onion on it's side carefully slice thin ring cuts 1/16 inch think the length of the onion. Take a hand full approximately 1/4 to 1/3 of the sliced red onion and place in flour. Mix well in the flour until coated. Shake off excess flour so only the coated onions remain. Excess flour in the fryer must be avoided as much as possible. It tends to ruin the fryer oil over time. See our section on proper fryer oil maintenance. Place the flour coated red onions in the fryer basket and give it one last shake and place in the preheated fryer. With a pair of metal tongs immediately begin fluffing the cooking onions to keep from sticking and burning. The frying time is quick so don't walk away. In a couple minutes of frying the red onions will turn golden brown and be ready to lift basket to drain.
Once you drop the coated red onions in the fryer pay attention to there time. It doesn't take long and the time it goes from perfect golden brown to burnt takes seconds. So don't walk away or get distracted otherwise you'll just be repeating the process until you get it right.
